Flash floods hit Beaufort, two Sabah interior roads closed due to landslides

KOTA KINABALU: The flood situation in Sabah's south western Beaufort has worsened after 468 people were evacuated over the last two days amid heavy rains.

The Civil Defence Force said evacuees from 137 families from 16 low lying villages in Beaufort and neighbouring Membakut were placed at two relief centres.

It added that 418 people from 121 families were housed at the Dun Banir community hall in Beaufort while a new relief centre in Membakut was opened at 7am on Saturday (March 8).

Several other areas in interior Tenom also reported flash floods with some families moving out of their homes to stay with relatives though no major evacuations were needed.

Meanwhile, two main roads connecting the state's interior areas were closed early this morning due to landslides that posed a safety risk to motorists.

The two routes at KM152 of Keningau - Tenom Road and KM14 of Keningau - Kimanis Road were closed due to continuous rainfall.

In a statement, JKR advised users from the state capital to Tenom to use the alternative route of the Tenom - Sipitang Road via the Sipitang district.
