No reports of shortage in Penang

GEORGE TOWN: There are no shortages of 1kg or 2kg bottles of cooking oil in Penang, according to state Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry director S. Jegan.

However, the supply of 1kg packets of cooking oil has been unstable, he added.

“Checks and monitoring of cooking oil supply at 33 hypermarkets and supermarket premises have been conducted since January this year.

“So far, there has been no shortage of bottled cooking oil.

“But in the northeast and southwest districts, there has been an unsteady supply of 1kg cooking oil packets,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Jegan added that the ministry would implement the Cooking Oil Price Stabilisation Scheme programme by zones next month.

Consumers Association of Penang research officer S. Ganesan said while there have been reports of cooking oil shortage in other states, the association has not received any such complaints in Penang.

Similarly, Penang Chinese Commercial Union chairman Tan Cheng Eow, who represented some 200 members in the state, and Penang Grocery Association chairman Datuk Leong Keng Fei both confirmed that the supply of bottled cooking oil in Penang is sufficient.
