Sabah government urged to take water crisis seriously before Aidilfitri

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government must take immediate action to resolve the state's prolonged water crisis, especially as demand surges ahead of Aidilfitri, says Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin.

He criticised the persistent water disruptions that burden residents and businesses, warning that the situation is becoming increasingly critical as the festive season approaches.

Bung Moktar also highlighted the problem of illegal water connections and theft.

“This issue has persisted for years, yet no concrete solution has been implemented. I want to ask the Sabah Water Department: How far the investigation into these illegal connections has progressed? How many individuals have been prosecuted?" he said on Wednesday (March 5).

Bung Moktar urged the state government to take firm action against illegal water connections by strengthening enforcement and addressing the causes of such activities.

At the same time, he stressed the need for a comprehensive strategy to improve Sabah’s water supply capacity and efficiency.

“The people should not have to endure continuous water shortages, especially during festive periods like Aidilfitri. The government must tackle this issue holistically and ensure there are no more persistent disruptions,” he said.

Bung Moktar assured that Sabah Umno would continue to push for urgent and effective measures to resolve the crisis, stressing that the well-being of Sabahans must come first.

“The government cannot afford to delay any longer. This is about the daily needs and livelihoods of the people,” he added.
