Journalist arrested over alleged bribery released on bail


PUTRAJAYA: A journalist who was detained last Friday (Feb 28) on suspicion of being involved in a corruption case has been released on bail.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the man was released on Tuesday (March 4) after his remand period ended.

"He was released on Tuesday on MACC bail and the investigation is ongoing," he said when contacted by Bernama, adding that several other individuals will be called in to complete the investigation.

He said the investigation paper is being finalised before being submitted to the deputy public prosecutor for further action.

On Monday (March 4), Azam said that the male journalist's arrest was related to allegations of corruption under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009 and not about any news reports he had written.

The journalist is suspected of soliciting and receiving a bribe of RM20,000 in exchange for taking down an online article and refraining from writing more articles about a foreign worker recruitment agency allegedly involved in a syndicate. – Bernama
