Bus switching lanes led to Penang Bridge accident

GEORGE TOWN: A 46-year-old woman and a 58-year-old man escaped serious injuries after their vehicle collided with a factory bus on the Penang Bridge.

George Town Deputy OCPD Supt Lee Swee Sake said the investigation revealed that the accident occurred at about 9.20am on Sunday (March 2).

"The incident happened when the bus was switching lanes from the middle lane to the right lane. A car driven by a 46-year-old woman approaching from the rear right side then collided with the back right section of the bus," he said.

As a result of the collision, the car lost control and veered into the opposite lane of the bridge.

The driver and her passenger sustained only minor injuries, while the 53-year-old bus driver was unharmed.

Earlier, The Star reported that a car lost control and overturned at KM7.5 of the Penang Bridge on Sunday morning.

The car was apparently travelling from the island to the mainland when it crashed into and then over the divider, tearing apart more than 10 divider panels before landing on the island-bound side of the bridge.

The case is being investigated under Section 43 of the Road Transport Act 1987.

In a separate case, a 71-year-old motorcyclist was killed after his motorcycle collided with another motorcycle at KM8 of the Penang Bridge mainland-bound.

Supt Lee said in the 8.30am incident, the senior citizen was killed on the spot while the other motorcyclist, a foreign citizen, sustained injuries and was taken to the Penang Hospital for treatment.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act.
