IN today’s world, digital access is more than just convenience – it’s a gateway to opportunity. It fuels education, drives businesses and strengthens communities.
Yet, for many Malaysians, stable internet remains out of reach.
As the future second 5G network provider, U Mobile is leading the charge to bridge the digital divide and create a truly connected Malaysia.
From bustling cities to the most remote villages, the telco is on a mission to expand network coverage and empower Malaysians through cutting-edge digital solutions.
Connecting Malaysians
For U Mobile, connectivity is more than just coverage bars on a phone – it’s about breaking barriers and empowering communities. As a key player in the National Digital Network Plan (Jendela) initiative, it is helping Malaysia close connectivity gaps faster than ever.
The first phase of Jendela, completed in 2022, focused on enhancing mobile and fixed broadband networks nationwide.
U Mobile stood out as one of only two operators to successfully upgrade 100% of its base stations, ensuring that more Malaysians could enjoy seamless connectivity.
Bridging the digital gap
Taking its efforts further, U Mobile was one of the first to collaborate with Sarawak Digital Economy Bhd (SDEC) on the Sarawak Multimedia Authority Rural Telecommunication 600 (SMART600) project.
The initiative, a brainchild of the Sarawak state government, aims to bring 4G connectivity to rural communities.
Through this, U Mobile deployed Multi Operator Core Network (MOCN) technology on SMART towers, allowing multiple operators to extend coverage to underserved areas.
To further boost accessibility, U Mobile, along with other telcos, recently introduced Industry Guideline For Network Infrastructure Sharing, setting a framework for MOCN technology adoption, ensuring Malaysians can stay connected, regardless of their telco provider.
A strong network is only the beginning – U Mobile is also equipping Malaysians with the tools they need to thrive in the digital economy.
Malaysia’s businesses are the backbone of its economy, and ensuring they are not left behind in the digital revolution, is one of U Mobile’s missions.
Continuing its partnership with SDEC until 2025, the collaboration aims to empower Sarawak’s small and medium-sized entrepreneurs (SMEs) with transformative 5G solutions.
This collaboration aligns with the Sarawak Digital Economy Blueprint 2030, unlocking new growth opportunities for businesses to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
Future-proofing the next gen
U Mobile’s Digital School pillar is transforming how young Malaysians interact with technology. As a digital-first company, U Mobile is driving digitalisation in government schools, equipping students with essential skills for the future by integrating fintech into everyday learning.
Through Projek Rintis: Cashless Ecosystems for Public Schools, students gain firsthand experience with digital finance, making seamless cashless transactions while developing financial literacy.
At the same time, parents can track their children’s spending, fostering responsible money management from an early age.3
Savvy seniors
Through its partnership with Bengkel Teknologi Senior, an initiative by Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), U Mobile is also equipping older Malaysians with vital digital skills.
From navigating mobile apps and making e-wallet transactions to creating digital stories, these workshops are empowering seniors with the confidence to embrace modern technology.
Bengkel Teknologi Senior founder Dr Tan Yun Yi shared that through this project, the organisation explored how collaborations with telco companies like U Mobile can play a significant role in driving positive change by bridging the digital divide and supporting underserved communities.
“Access to reliable internet has always been a critical consideration for us, especially as we conduct workshops in diverse locations. Thanks to U Mobile’s support, we overcame this challenge.
“With U Mobile’s support, we are inspired to continue building a Malaysia where lifelong learning, inclusivity and digital empowerment are celebrated, while aligning with national goals of nation-building and progress,” she added.
Skills of the future
U Mobile’s commitment to digital inclusivity extends to Malaysia’s tech-driven youth, empowering future tech leaders through its partnership with 42KL, an innovative tuition-free computer programming school where young Malaysians are honing their skills and gaining the expertise needed to drive the nation’s digital economy forward.
For chief executive officer Jeff Sandhu, the role of 42KL lies in dismantling the traditional barriers that have long kept so many from accessing the digital economy.
“42KL is more than just education – it’s a movement to democratise access to opportunities, bridging the digital divide in a way that transforms lives and uplifts communities,” he said, adding that this mission aligns with U Mobile’s commitment to inclusivity and connectivity.
“Together, we’re not just bridging the digital gap; we’re building pathways to a future where no one is left behind – a future where talent, ambition, and innovation are the only prerequisites for success.”
Power of 5G
As Malaysia’s second 5G network provider, U Mobile is at the forefront of the country’s digital revolution.
With ultra-fast speeds and ultra-low latency, 5G is set to redefine connectivity for businesses, individuals, and entire industries.
By leveraging this next-gen technology to drive enterprise digitalisation, U Mobile supports government initiatives, and ultimately transforms Malaysia into a high-income, tech-powered nation.
U Mobile’s journey is about more than just expanding its network – it’s about shaping Malaysia’s digital destiny.
Through nationwide coverage expansion, cutting-edge initiatives, and strategic collaborations, the telco is ensuring that every Malaysian, no matter where they are, has a seat at the digital table.
