JOHOR BARU: A woman from Segamat hopes to finally reunite with her biological parents – a Chinese couple – since finding out she was adopted more than two decades ago.
Nor Idayu Ibrahim, 39, said she had a shocking revelation at age 17 when her mother told her that she was born to a Malaysian-Chinese mother but adopted into the family as a baby.
“Like many girls my age, I liked making new friends and chatting with them on the Internet. My foster mother, who was worried about my safety, revealed that I was adopted and that she was scared of losing me.
“I was not only surprised about being adopted but also the fact that I was born to a Chinese couple,” she said.
Nor Idayu said her foster parents decided to adopt her after her foster mother suffered from several miscarriages.
Over the years, her foster mother only revealed snippets of her adoption and refused to go into detail about her biological parents.
“According to her, I am the child of a young Chinese couple, who were not in the capacity to take care of a baby at the time.
“My foster parents also have no documents related to my biological parents or photos of them at all so I do not know where to start looking for them.
“I don’t blame my foster mother for not wanting to reveal more as she was afraid that I would leave her and return to my biological mother,” said Nor Idayu, a housewife who stays in Pogoh, Segamat, with her husband.
After her foster father and mother passed away respectively in 2016 and 2022, she finally had the courage to look for her biological parents without worrying about hurting their feelings.
“After all these years, I yearn to know who my real parents are and if I have any biological siblings.
“Every Chinese New Year, I will think of them more, and wonder what they are like and whether they are doing well.
“I am turning 40 next year and I really hope to reunite with them one day so I can thank them for giving birth to me and also make up for lost time,” she said.
