Our envoys should also focus on economic diplomacy, says Foreign Minister

KUALA LUMPUR: Wisma Putra will give extra focus on economic diplomacy on top of its core diplomatic responsibilities, such as fostering and strengthening bilateral and multilateral relations, says Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

"We recognise that Malaysia’s economic strength is the backbone of our nation.

"Wisma Putra must adopt an economic diplomacy as a second pillar of our diplomatic approach.

"Our envoys should not only focus on diplomatic ties but also actively work to enhance economic relations, both bilaterally and multilaterally, between Malaysia and other countries.

"We cannot rely solely on our traditional markets or a single source of trade.

"Our goods and services must be traded globally to ensure economic resilience. Over-dependence on traditional markets could place us in a vulnerable position if disruptions occur," he said.

He added that Malaysia’s cooperation in BRICS, European Union (EU) and Gulf countries was for economic opportunities.
