Pawnshop worker detained to help in Norshamira Zainal murder probe


KUANTAN: A pawnshop worker in Kuala Terengganu has been held by police to assist in the investigation of the murder of a woman food vendor here last week.

Kuantan OCPD Asst Comm Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu said the 42-year-old man was arrested by a police team at the pawnshop at 10.30am on Saturday (Feb 15).

He said initial investigations revealed that the suspect in the murder visited the pawnshop to pawn her gold bracelet, estimated to be worth RM30,000, and dealt with this particular worker.

"For now, we have found that only the victim’s gold bracelet was pawned. The pawnshop employee has also been remanded for a week to assist in the investigation.

"The remand order was issued this morning by a Magistrate’s Court to facilitate further investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code,” he said when contacted on Sunday (Feb 16).

ACP Wan Mohd Zahari, meanwhile, confirmed that the woman’s murder was motivated by robbery.

Police arrested the main suspect at a residential area in Wakaf Tembesu, Gong Badak, Kuala Terengganu, at 5.30am on Saturday and seized a ring, cash, clothing and documents.

The 53-year-old suspect was remanded for a week from Saturday to help in the murder probe.

The body of Norshamira Zainal, 37, was found by the river near the Tanjung Lumpur Bridge on Thursday (Feb 13).

A post-mortem revealed that the victim died from head trauma caused by a hard or blunt object. Police have also advised the public not to speculate about her death. – Bernama
