PUTRAJAYA: Immigration operations against undocumented migrants will be intensified despite depots facing overcrowding issues as it is a matter of national sovereignty and security, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail says.
In his speech during the Home Ministry's monthly assembly here on Monday (July 27), he said the department needs to keep up the momentum to ensure that foreigners in the country comply with the Immigration Act 1959/63.
This includes those who have valid documents, to ensure that they do not overstay or misuse their visit passes.
"Our country is open and gives them the opportunity to earn a living, but they must also comply with our laws.
"If they are found to have violated the regulations, appropriate action must be taken, including detention at immigration depots," he said.
He added that the country has 19 depots, but they are over capacity following the increase in enforcement action.
He also noted that this had led to criticism from various parties, including non-governmental organisations (NGOs) raising humanitarian concerns.
"However, the government needs to strike a balance between law enforcement and the welfare of detainees," he said.
Saifuddin Nasution also revealed that during a previous bilateral meeting between Malaysia and Indonesia, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto thanked Malaysia for providing employment opportunities to his country's citizens.
"He also stressed that if Indonesian citizens violate Malaysia's domestic laws, we must take action accordingly," he added.
