Eye on crooks: CCTV boost for security in Kampung Likas amid rising crime

KOTA KINABALU: Concerned about rising crime in his neighbourhood, a Kampung Likas resident and community leader has initiated the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) at 24 key locations.

Datuk Mohamed Razali Razi, who is also Darau Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) division chief, said the initiative is aimed at enhancing the residents' security.

Phase 1 of the project was carried out from Jan 1 in Kampung Cenderamata 1 with support from Gagasan Rakyat branch members and local leaders.

“I appreciate their cooperation and commitment in helping to improve security in the villages involved,” he said in a statement on Thursday (Feb 13).

The first phase covers several areas, including Kampung Cenderamata 1, Kampung Likas Lama, the junction near SK Likas, Jalan Muhibbah, Kampung Cenderamata 2, Lorong Lengkok, Lorong Diak Likas Lama and Kampung Cempaka.

The area has seen frequent house break-ins and thefts, prompting residents to push for better security.

Razali noted that the CCTVs will help by aiding in the detection of thefts, accidents and other incidents.

He also stressed that the initiative would be expanded beyond Likas to cover the entire Darau constituency.

“We will continue installing CCTVs in other villages under Darau to enhance security,” he added.
