KOTA KINABALU: Suara Mahasiswa Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) welcomes the government's move to amend the Peaceful Assembly Act, particularly the removal of venue owners' consent requirements and the immediate cessation of investigations into students involved in anti-corruption demonstrations.
In a statement Thursday (Feb 13), the student group, led by its president Muhamad Fadhil Muhamad Kasim, said these amendments align with Article 10 of the Federal Constitution, which guarantees the right to peaceful assembly and free expression.
However, Suara Mahasiswa UMS stressed that these changes are only part of the broader reforms needed to strengthen freedom of speech and assembly.
They urged the government to ensure that authorities do not resort to intimidation, pressure, or undue restrictions on organisers and participants before, during, or after peaceful gatherings.
The group also reiterated its call for greater accountability among leaders, particularly in anti-corruption efforts in Sabah.
"As students, we believe that peaceful assemblies and demonstrations are crucial democratic mechanisms for voicing public concerns and advocating for change.
“We remain committed to ensuring these rights are not only recognised in law but also upheld and enforced fairly," Muhamad Fadhil said..
Suara Mahasiswa UMS previously held an anti-corruption gathering outside Menara Kinabalu on New Year’s Eve 2024 as part of its campaign for greater transparency and integrity.
