Mindef almost ready with new Bintulu naval base plan

KOTA TINGGI: The Defence Ministry is in the final stage of assessing the suitability and challenges of the construction site for the Region 4 naval headquarters in Bintulu.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin (pic), who disclosed this, said he had directed that the project be expedited and implemented smoothly.

He said the facility is necessary to accommodate the Littoral Mission Ships (LMS), which are expected to be completed by the end of 2027.

“This is a priority project, and I have directed the ministry to accelerate its progress,” he told reporters after officiating a Ramadan contribution ceremony for mosques and surau yesterday, Bernama reported.

Mohamed Khaled previously said the ministry was negotiating with the Sarawak government on the premium land price for the construction of the naval headquarters there.

The building of the new naval base was among the issues discussed with Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Earlier, Mohamed Khaled, who is Kota Tinggi MP, said a total of RM132,000 was allocated to 28 mosques and 48 surau in the constituency for Ramadan activities.

Each mosque received RM3,000 in cash aid, while each surau was given RM1,000.
