KOTA KINABALU: The water supply for thousands of consumers in Kota Kinabalu and surrounding areas will gradually be restored over the weekend following a shutdown on Friday (Feb 7) to repair a crack in a main pipeline.
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Shahelmy Yahya said that once the repair works are completed, the water supply should be restored to consumers in Kota Kinabalu, neighbouring Penampang, and Putatan.
The state Works Minister said that late Friday, Sabah Water Department and Jetama Sdn Bhd personnel completed repairs on a crack in the main pipeline along Jalan Penampang.
“The water pressure is now gradually returning to normal,” he said at an event in Putatan near here on Sunday (Feb 9).
However, residents in certain areas were still experiencing either no water supply or low pressure.
“The illegal connection of water supply has been identified as one of the main causes of water disruption in Sabah," said Shahelmey
The Works Minister also did not discount the possibility of sabotage as the cause of the state’s water woes.
He said in Sandakan, the water levels in some tube wells had declined, and water officials sought alternative sources to address the shortages in the short term.
He said they were also looking at diverting water from the Kinabatangan district to Sandakan to meet the demand.
