PETALING JAYA: Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) is receiving RM2mil in funding for its TARC-Tan Sri Khaw Kai Boh Student Loan Fund.
The signing ceremony for the formalising of the funding took place yesterday in the presence of TAR UMT president Prof Datuk Dr Lee Sze Wei, TAR UMT board of governors chairman Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy, and the son of the late Tan Sri Khaw Kai Boh, Khaw Chay Tee.
“Kai Boh was a very important leader for this university as he gave his best efforts and hard work to ensure the then TAR College came into being.
“I am sure that if Kai Boh were alive today, he would be forthcoming and happy to establish this student loan fund.”
Chan also voiced his gratitude, saying that “all of us at TAR UMT are grateful to Chay Tee for establishing this special student loan fund in honour of his late father”.
The funding, he said, was an important continuation of Kai Boh’s legacy in providing the needy with affordable and quality tertiary education.
Chay Tee said his late father would have been so proud to see the present achievement of TAR UMT.
“When my father was given the task of laying down the foundation for the establishment of TARC in 1968, it had been one of his greatest challenges as the institution’s primary objective was to equip its graduates with the necessary qualifications and skills to obtain employment.
“If he were alive today, he would have been so proud to see the objective fulfilled with TAR UMT now becoming a renowned institution in Malaysia for producing top-quality and industry-ready graduates,” said Chay Tee.
The TAR UMT Student Loan Fund, an interest-free, revolving loan fund, was established in 1979 to assist needy and deserving students in pursuing and completing their tertiary education.
Its funding comes from monetary donations contributed by alumni, corporations, foundations, philanthropists and well-meaning Malaysians from all walks of life.
Chan said since the loan fund’s inception, a total of 16,422 students have benefited from the financial assistance.
“With the addition of the TARC-Tan Sri Khaw Kai Boh Student Loan Fund, it will further renew our commitment to carrying on the legacy he has left for us,” said Chan.
To date, there are 134 student loans offered under the TAR UMT Student Loan Fund.
