MACC to record statements of three celebs today

KUALA LUMPUR: Three celebrities, including a well-known singer, are expected to have their statements recorded today, as part of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) Op Sky investigations into a financial consultancy company’s involvement in corruption and money laundering activities.

MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the three individuals are expected to appear at its headquarters in Putrajaya at 10am.

“I would like to clarify that these three individuals are only being called to provide statements to assist in further investigations related to Op Sky.

“This does not mean they are considered suspects. Their statements are needed to complete the investigation papers,” he told Bernama yesterday.

MACC’s investigations found that celebrities and artistes had received payments of up to RM400,000 for promotional purposes during their stint as “ambassadors” of the company which spanned over one to two years.

Through Op Sky, MACC uncovered elements of corruption and money laundering activities involving the company and bank officers from several financial institutions.

A total of 27 individuals, including 18 bank officers, eight employees of the financial consultancy and one civilian, have all been released on MACC bail, under Ops Sky.

MACC also seized about 4,000 documents and froze 98 bank accounts with RM17,403,644.

On another note, Azam said it is too early to open investigation papers on allegations of misconduct by a Kuala Lumpur City Hall advisory board member in relation to the award of a RM4mil project.

He added that the city hall is cooperating with MACC.
