High Court approves joint trial for Yusoff Rawther's drug and gun cases

KUALA LUMPUR: Former political researcher Muhammed Yusoff Rawther will have his two cases involving drugs and gun possession tried together at the High Court in April.

Justice Muhammad Jamil Hussin fixed a five-day trial with hearing dates set between April 7 and April 11.

"The application is allowed. The cases will be tried together," he said during case management here on Thursday (Feb 6).

The court also fixed March 11 for further case management.

During the proceedings, deputy public prosecutor Mohd Sabri Othman appeared for the prosecution while lawyer Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali represented Muhammed Yusoff.

The prosecution had sought for a joint trial as it involved the same witnesses.

Muhammed Yusoff, 32, was accused of trafficking 305g of cannabis. The drug was found in his vehicle near the surau at the Kuala Lumpur Police Headquarters at 10.15am on Sept 6, last year.

He was charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a sentence of life imprisonment and at least 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.

He also pleaded not guilty to a charge of possessing two imitation firearms by the roadside near a condominium on Jalan Bukit Kiara at 9.25am the same day.

The charge was framed under Section 36(1) of the Arms Act 1960, which provides for a maximum penalty of one year in prison, a fine of up to RM5,000, or both, upon conviction.
