George Town mall incident: Cops confirm no criminal elements found


GEORGE TOWN: The police have said there were no criminal elements found in connection with the incident where a tourist fell from the seventh floor of a mall here.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the 25-year-old foreigner who fell in a shopping centre here sustained head injuries, was conscious and was taken to the Penang Hospital.

"Based on the investigation at the incident scene, no criminal element was found.

"Initial investigations have found that the man is a tourist and is believed to have suffered head injuries from the incident.

"He was conscious and sent to the Penang Hospital at around 2.20pm," he said in a statement on Wednesday (Feb 5).

ACP Abdul Rozak said the incident happened on Wed (Feb 5) at 1.54pm.

"We received a call at 1.55pm regarding the incident and were told that a man fell from the seventh floor of the mall.

"We urge people not to speculate and make any assumptions about this incident, which could lead to issues and anger the public," he said.

Earlier, the mall released a statement confirming the incident after a man fell and crashed into its Chinese New Year decorations.

The incident was captured on camera by onlookers who were shocked to see the roof of the decoration caved in and a man lying on the ground.
