Man feared drowned after 4WD plunges into flooded drain in Sibu


SIBU: A man is feared to have drowned after his four-wheel-drive vehicle plunged into the drain of a heavily flooded Jalan Ling Kai Cheng, here.

The victim has been identified as Wong Sing Ang, 53. He was believed to have been driving home late Friday (Jan 31) night when the incident happened.

Sibu Fire and Rescue Department chief Andy Alie said his department received a distress call regarding the vehicle at 12.12am Saturday (Feb 1).

He said that at the time, the road was flooded to a height of up to one meter, and the drain's depth ranged from three to four metres.

"A total of 16 firefighters put themselves at risk during the search and rescue operation. However, the operation had to be halted at 2:22am for the safety of the firefighters," he said, adding that they had managed to retrieve the victim's sling bag.

The operation continues on Saturday morning.
