Accident blackspots and congestion hotspots identified for Ops Selamat


KUALA LUMPUR: Seventy-six accident blackspots and 407 traffic congestion hotspots have been identified nationwide, says Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri.

The Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director said such locations were identified for Ops Selamat held in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration.

"We expect some 2.2 million vehicles to be on the road this festive season especially when school holidays have started since Jan 17.

"We believe the peak periods for this Ops Selamat will be on Jan 29 and Feb 2," he said when contacted on Wednesday (Jan 29).

Comm Mohd Yusri said 23 Emergency Response Teams (ERT) have been formed consisting of JSPT, JPJ, the Fire and Rescue Department, St John Ambulance and other relevant agencies.

"They will be placed along major highways to assist any emergency by road users," he said.

Some 3,609 JSPT officers will be deployed throughout Ops Selamat around the country, he said.

"We will be strict in enforcement action, focusing on six main offences.

"The offences are speeding, driving while using a telecommunication device, driving in the emergency lane, running through a traffic light, overtaking on a double-line and cutting queue," he said.

Comm Mohd Yusri also urged drivers of commercial vehicles to use alternative routes such as federal and state routes to lessen congestion on major highways and expressways.

"All road users must abide by traffic rules and regulations.

"Don't drive while under the influence of alcohol or other substances," he said.

He also reminded road users to plan their journeys and ensure their vehicles are well-maintained.

"The most important aspect is to get to your destination safely," he said.
