Four arrested after marine police seize firearms in Penang waters

GEORGE TOWN: Four men, including two Indonesian nationals, were arrested after marine police discovered caches of firearms on their boats on Monday.

According to a source, the suspects were detained following intelligence on smuggling activities near the Penang Port at approximately 3pm.

"Upon arrival, the patrol team conducted inspections on two fibreglass boats. During the inspection, they discovered a pistol in the middle section of one of the boats," said the source.

The boats were subsequently escorted to the Batu Uban marine police jetty for further investigation.

Upon arrival at the jetty, a thorough inspection of the boats revealed five pistols, six pistol magazines, 211 pistol bullets, four M4 rifles, eight M4 magazines, and 500 M4 bullets.

The source added that the seized firearms were brought to the Batu Uban marine police jetty for documentation purposes.

The case has been classified under Section 8 of the Firearms Act 1971.

A press conference regarding the arrests and seizures is scheduled to be held at the Region 1 Marine Police Base in Batu Uban at 3pm on Tuesday (Jan 28).
