Two firemen suffer electric shock while putting out Petagas shophouse blaze


KOTA KINABALU: Two firemen suffered from electric shock while putting out a blaze at a shophouse block in Petagas, Putatan on Wednesday night (Jan 22).

One victim has been sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for further treatment while the other only needed tending from the emergency responders on site, said a Fire and Rescue Department spokesman on Thursday (Jan 23).

A report came in at 11.59pm on Wednesday about the fire at Jalan Pantai Berahi, Taman Jumbo area there.

A team from Putatan Fire Station was sent to the location, assisted by teams from Kota Kinabalu and Penampang fire stations.

“A total of 38 firemen were involved in the operation. Police and Sabah Electricity staff were also at the scene.

“A shophouse unit in the four-storey building was destroyed in the fire but no civilians were hurt.

“The two firemen who were hurt by the electric shock, meanwhile, are stable.

“The fire was under control at 12.40am (Thursday) and the operation ended at 1.40am,” said the Department spokesman.
