TWO Indian siblings have developed an interest in silat, and have been honing their skills at Perguruan Silat Gerak Langkacitra Kuantan, Sinar Harian reported.
Yashvini Nair Raja Kumaran, 17, and her brother Thilesh Nair, nine, are among the non-Malay trainees achieving success in various competitions across Pahang.
Yashvini shared that she picked up the traditional Malay martial art because of her brother.
“The training was close to home, so I accompanied my brother. From there, I became intrigued and decided to join the sessions with other trainees.”
She added that she has participated in various tournaments and emerged as the champion of Class E Silat Olahraga at Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Polytechnic (Polisas) Invitational IPT and Pahang Youth Silat Championship 2024.
Thilesh was also the champion in the F/G Pra Tunas Putra category at Pahang Tunas Harapan Silat Championship and the Pahang Silat Association (Pesaka) Invitational in Temerloh recently, she revealed.
Yashvini said learning silat has helped her become more disciplined and focused.
Their mother S. Parameswari, 46, fully supports their passion.
“We are all Malaysians and I’m happy with the support my children are receiving,” said Parameswari, a widow.

“Thankfully, my neck wasn’t fractured or broken, but a nerve in the area became slightly inflamed, and I need a month of rest.
“I was trying to step out of my comfort zone by performing my own stunts but didn’t expect to get injured so early. The pain was intense and my hands went numb,” he added.
Adam spent about a week in hospital before being discharged early January.
