Johor police arrest couple over Umrah fraud


JOHOR BARU: Two local individuals have been arrested to assist in investigations into fraudulent Umrah package schemes reported in Johor.

Johor Police Chief Comm Datuk M. Kumar said the married couple are both 32-years-old and are the owners of the Umrah travel agency Hejira Travel and Tour Holding Sdn Bhd.

"The arrests were made on January 18 following their release on police bail by the Selangor Police Contingent after completing a remand period there," he said.

"The couple was detained for investigations into fraudulent Umrah package schemes reported in Johor."

"So far, nine police reports have been filed, involving total losses amounting to RM174,080," he added in a statement on Monday (Jan 20).

Comm Kumar added that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

Both suspects have been released on police bail, and the investigation papers will be finalised shortly before being referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) for further direction.

The police urge the public to verify travel agencies with relevant authorities before engaging their services to ensure they are licensed and have a proven track record.
