Cops detain three men over assault of disabled man at market

PETALING JAYA: Three individuals, including a trader, have been arrested by police over an alleged assault of a disabled man (OKU) at a farmers market in Padang Astaka Chukai, Terengganu here on Friday.

Acting Kemaman OCPD DSP Wan Muhammad Wan Ja'afar said the men aged between 18 and 60 were arrested to provide statements at the Kemaman district police headquarters at about 8pm on Friday (Jan 17).

"The individuals detained have had their statements recorded and the police are continuing the investigation under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting.

"Any witnesses with information about the incident are urged to come forward to the nearest police station," he said when contacted on Saturday (Jan 18).

DSP Wan Muhammad added that the 47-year-old mentally disabled victim, who sustained minor injuries, was treated at Kemaman Hospital and has been handed over to his family.

He also advised the victim's family to monitor his movements to prevent similar incidents from recurring.

Earlier, it was reported police had responded to a case of assault before a crowd at the market around 9.30am on Friday.

Initial investigations revealed that the incident occurred when the victim, riding a motorcycle, entered the farmers' market area and accidentally collided with a stall, causing items from the stall to fall.

The assault on the victim drew public attention after a one-minute 52-second video recording of the incident went viral on social media.
