Cops warn public not to pick cockles along Dungun coast

KUALA TERENGGANU: Police have issued a warning against collecting cockles along the coastline in Dungun district.

Dungun OCPD Supt Maizura Abdul Kadir said this came after police received several reports about the activity, which posed a danger to those involved owing to current sea conditions.

"This is to ensure the safety and well-being of the local community.

"The coastline in Dungun district carries a high risk because of strong sea currents, with wind speeds reaching 60kph and waves up to 4.4m in height, as well as unpredictable weather changes," she said in a statement on Thursday (Jan 16).

She added that the police would conduct regular monitoring of the beach areas to ensure compliance with the instruction.

It was reported earlier in the week that people flocked to Sura Beach in the district to pick cockles washed up on the shore by large waves. – Bernama
