PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (Maqis) has handed over 417 boxes of frozen chicken cuts weighing 5,004kg that it confiscated to Zoo Negara.
Maqis director-general Shamsul Akbar Sulaiman said the seized chicken, valued at RM42,023, would be used to feed animals at the zoo.
"The raw materials (imports) were seized after failing to comply with legal requirements under Section 11(1) and Section 13 of the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Act.
"We hope this donation will help cover the costs of raw materials to be used as food for the animals at the zoo," he said in a statement on Wednesday (Jan 15).
He added that in 2024, Maqis handed over a total of 91,737.7kg, valued at RM 835,713.76, to various agencies and parties in need.
Shamsul Akbar added that this is one of the methods used to dispose of seized animal products, adding that Maqis will not compromise on non-compliance, particularly on biosecurity issues. – Bernama
