Penang Chinese cemetery razed by fire

GEORGE TOWN: Residents living near a Chinese cemetery in Jalan Batu Lanchang were caught by surprise when fire razed the cemetery on Thursday afternoon.

Air Itam assemblyman Joseph Ng on his official Facebook page said his service centre and Seri Delima service centre staff were on site when they heard about the 1.30pm incident.

"The firefighters were already at the site to ensure the safety of the residents," he said.

When contacted Ng said that besides the state Fire and Rescue Department, a volunteer fire squad were also at the site to help douse the fire.

He said the cause of the fire probably was due to the hot weather.

The fire was doused completely at about 3pm.
