TANGKAK: Police are investigating an incident involving an LED rocket replica displaying China's flag at the Bukit Gambir LED Light Carnival here.
Tangkak OCPD Supt Roslan Mohd Talib confirmed that a police report had been filed and that investigations are ongoing.
"The case is being investigated under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for making statements with intent to cause fear or alarm to the public," he said when contacted on Thursday (Dec 26).
"It is also being examined under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities."
Supt Roslan added that authorities would be questioning those involved to assist with the investigation.
Meanwhile, Gambir assemblyman Sahrihan Jani has called for strict action against the event organisers, following public outcry over the incident.
In a statement on his Facebook page, Sahrihan said the issue could create unease within the community.
"I have been in contact with the Tangkak District Council from the outset, expressing my concerns that this issue could lead to public distress," he said.
Sahrihan added that there is a need for proactive measures, including revoking the permit and halting the event if the organisers are found to have violated guidelines set by the council and security authorities.
He also commended the Ledang Umno Youth for their prompt action in filing a police report and issuing an early statement on the matter.
"This shows Umno's firm stance against any actions that could undermine the dignity and security of the nation," Sahrihan added.
The assemblyman also shared that he had been unofficially informed that the carnival’s operations would cease on Dec 26.
Sahrihan reiterated the need for event organisers to be more sensitive to cultural values and to avoid actions that could provoke public unease.
"I strongly urge firm action, including prosecution in court and the immediate closure of the carnival. An apology is not enough to make up for this wrongdoing," he said.
The controversy began when a photo of a giant rocket replica, with a Chinese flag displayed on its wings, went viral online.
