Motorist and elderly parents killed in crash near Mersing

MERSING: A 36-year-old man and his elderly parents were killed while his five-year-old child was injured in an accident at KM45 on Jalan Kota Tinggi-Mersing here.

Mersing OCPD Supt Abdul Razak Abdullah Sani said they were informed of the accident at about 8.30pm on Sunday (Dec 15).

The victims were from Felcra Sungai Ara in Kota Tinggi, he added.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the accident occurred when the 28-year-old driver of a car bound for Johor Baru from Kuantan lost control of his vehicle.

“The car then veered into the oncoming car and collided with the car in which the victims were travelling," he said when contacted on Monday (Dec 16).

Supt Abdul Razak said the 36-year-old driver sustained serious head injuries and he was pronounced dead at Hospital Mersing.

“His parents, 65 and 71, died at the scene after succumbing to severe head injuries.

“The driver’s five-year-old daughter also suffered head injuries and is being treated at Hospital Sultan Ismail,” he said, adding that the girl is now in stable condition.

Supt Abdul Razak said the driver of the car sustained serious injuries to his body as well as a broken arm.

“He is also being treated at Hospital Sultan Ismail,” he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Meanwhile, Mersing Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Zainuddin Ahmad said three of the victims from the two cars were rescued by passers-by.

“The drivers of both cars and a young girl were rescued and taken to hospital.

“Unfortunately, two elderly passengers, a man and a woman, were pronounced dead by Health Department officers at the scene,” he said.
