50 nabbed in immigration raid at Cheras clothing factory

KUALA LUMPUR: A raid at a clothing factory suspected of hiring undocumented migrants led to 50 arrests.

Immigration Department director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said that the raid on Dec 11 was conducted at the Cheras factory following public complaints and a two-week surveillance period.

“The operation team arrested a Bangladeshi man, aged 46, who we believed was acting as a manager. It is believed that he had been hiring undocumented migrants.

“Also detained were 34 Bangladeshi men and 15 Myanmar women who were believed had been hired as tailors,” he said.

Investigations showed that the company had been operating for around two years.

“Around 40 time cards and various sewing machines were seized during the operation,” he said adding that all have been sent to the Bukit Jalil depot for further investigations.
