'Don't drag Malaysia into a digital dictatorship': Opposition MP slams tabling of Online Safety Bill

KUALA LUMPUR: Do not drag Malaysia into a digital dictatorship era, a lawmaker told the government and called for the Online Safety Bill to be deferred to the Parliamentary Special Select Committee (PSSC).

While debating the Bill, Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas) said the definition of harmful content was unclear and subjective.

“Who can define this, the MCMC or the minister?” he said.

“We (Perikatan Nasional) were also victims of slander. Perikatan wants to ask what is the guarantee that the slanderous accusation against us on social media will not continue.”

“For example, someone started the rumour that Perikatan got gambling funds and it was spread on the Internet and social media.”

“PAS was also slandered that we received RM90mil from Umno which couldn’t be proven until today,” he said.

He questioned how could the law defend the victims.

He said the Bill should be referred back to the PSSC and put for public consultation.

“Let’s not drag Malaysia to an era of digital dictatorship and I will not support this Bill,” he said.

The Bill was tabled for the first reading on Tuesday (Dec 10).
