Liew urges Sabah PKR members to stay resilient amid leadership change

KOTA KINABALU: Losing the Sabah Pakatan Harapan chairmanship by a narrow margin does not equate to defeat, says Datuk Seri Christina Liew.

The Api-Api PKR chief also urged party members in the state to remain focused and united.

“There is not much to say about the election outcome, it was clear. I lost by three votes.

"However, my message to Sabah PKR division heads, supporters, and members is to stay calm and continue the work we’ve done over the past 25 years,” Liew said.

The recent election saw United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (Upko) president Datuk Ewon Benedick secure more votes, replacing three-term Sabah Pakatan chairman Liew.

The result, she noted, caused some unease among Sabah PKR members.

“Some were confused because PKR was the original founder of Pakatan Harapan. Our journey has been challenging, especially during our years in Opposition. But we have always remained united and resilient,” said Liew, who is also the Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister and Api-Api assemblyman.

Despite setbacks, she noted PKR's growth from an Opposition party to being part of the government, attributing this to the party’s hard work and commitment.

Liew stressed the importance of humility and perseverance, even while in government.

“Losing by three votes does not mean defeat. PKR remains strong, and we will continue to serve and work for the people,” she told reporters after officiating the 70th anniversary of Sabah’s oldest hotel, the Jesselton Hotel.

When asked about internal challenges, Liew reminded members that PKR has weathered worse.

“Whether in Opposition or government, our spirit remains the same. I encourage members to rebuild, respect the new leadership, and avoid unnecessary negativity.

“We respect the election results and will continue to support the government and our party’s agenda,” she added.

On the Pakatan Harapan Council meeting, Liew said they were not informed of its details but respected the process and remained committed to PKR’s priorities in Sabah.

She also confirmed that Prime Minister and PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had been informed of the election results, adding “I trust our well-organised PKR structure to handle the analysis and next steps.”
