Irish court sentences Malaysian to eight years' jail for sexually assaulting teenager

PETALING JAYA: A Malaysian has been sentenced to jail by the Irish courts after he was found guilty for sexually assaulting a teenager there.

According to the Irish Times, Amirul Arif Mohd Yunos, a psychiatrist, was sentenced to eight years and six months' jail.

The 38-year-old was working at a mental health clinic for children and teenagers in Clonskeagh, Dublin when the offence was committed last year.

According to reports, the victim was not officially a patient of Amirul Arif's but was known to her family who had asked him for help to treat her mental health issues.

The first incident occurred when she was 15 years old with subsequent assaults taking place until September 2023.

Amirul Arif reported pleaded guilty to six charges of sexual acts towards children below the age of 17, one charge of child sexual exploitation and one charge of meeting a child for sexual exploitation purposes.

"The courts were told that the victim, now 17, suffered continuous mental anguish following the incidents.

"The assaults started with inappropriate touching before it escalated to oral and penetrative sex. The incidents occurred in several locations including his work place and in a car," Irish Times reported.

The victim's statement, read by prosecution lawyer Derek Cooney BL, stated that she had blamed herself because she felt that she had "encouraged" the situation. The statement added that she would now have doubts on anyone helping her.
