Over 17 millions users on 5G network, says Gobind

JOHOR BARU: About 17.5 million users nationwide have jumped on the 5G network so far, says Gobind Singh Deo.

The Digital Minister said this as the country’s 5G coverage in populated areas has exceeded 82% at present.

“My ministry, through Digital Nasional Bhd, has and will continue providing 5G infrastructure and the high number of usage shows there is an attraction towards the technology.

“We also want to ensure all infrastructure is safe and secured especially when it comes to cyber security and user data,” he told reporters after launching the Transforming Manufacturing with 5G and artificial intelligence (AI) programme at a hotel here on Tuesday (Dec 3).

Meanwhile, Gobind said his ministry would be setting up a branch in Medini9, Iskandar Puteri here soon to provide the necessary support for the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ).

Asked about data centres, the minister said the government has not set any limits as to how many data centres can be set up in Johor.

“However, we will examine every application and look at the suitability of the investment beforehand such as the land requirements and utility supplies needed.

“The state government will assist in this process,” he said, adding that no limit was set as the government not only wants data centres to be set up but also AI data centres.

In late October, Gobind reportedly said there were more than 50 data centres in Johor, either in application, construction or already operational.
