HUNDREDS attended the 17th anniversary of the Hindraf rally, which was a seminal moment in the country’s political history, Malaysia Nanban reported.

The event, themed “Ezhuchi Vizha” (Uplift Festival), was held at the Batu Caves temple compound. It was attended by prominent Indian leaders and members of the movement.

Klang MP and former Selangor state exco member V. Ganabatirau, who was among five detained for participating in the rally, and Banting assemblyman and state exco member V. Papparaidu were among those in attendance.

The Hindraf 2007 rally, which culminated from the protest movement against Hindu temples being torn down and the events that followed the first rally of its magnitude, forever altered the political landscape of the country, said the daily.

Ganabatirau, who spoke at the event, said he will continue voicing out the Indian community’s needs even when some detractors have complained that he speaks like an Opposition member in Parliament.
