UPNM cadet claims trial to causing hurt to junior using spiked boot in latest bullying case

KUALA LUMPUR: Another Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) cadet has been charged at the Sessions Court here with causing hurt to a junior using a spiked boot.

Mohd Adil Mat Awang Ghani, 22, claimed trial after the charge was read out before Magistrate Noorelynna Hanim Abd Halim here on Friday (Nov 22).

According to the charge sheet, Mohd Adil allegedly voluntarily caused hurt on Muhammad Haziq Iqbal, 19, by stepping the victim's stomach using a spiked boot.

The offence was allegedly committed at a field, the military training academy at UPNM at about 10.45pm on Oct 21.

The charge under Section 323 of the Penal Code carries imprisonment up to one year or fine up to RM2,000 or both, if convicted.

When asked for his plea, Mohd Adil answered: "Tidak, puan (I plead not guilty, ma'am)".

Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Sabri Othman offered bail at RM10,000 in one surety.

He also asked the court to impose an order for the accused not to come near the complainant in the case.

Lawyer Nurul Diyana Basher from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK), who appeared for Mohd Adil, said that the accused was no longer considered a young offender due to his age.

However, she asked the court to still consider that Mohd Adil was still undergoing military training and strict conditions by the court may affect the training.

"He has been charged but not convicted. The court must not be punitive. We asked the court's discretion to impose a low bail amount, as low as possible," she said.

Magistrate Noorelynna Hanim fixed bail at RM5,000 in one surety and ordered the accused not to come near the complainant.

She also fixed Feb 10 next year, for mention.

Earlier this month, another UPNM cadet Amirul Iskandar Norhanizan, 22, claimed trial at the Sessions Court to voluntarily causing hurt to another junior by using a hot steam iron.
