Sabah Railway, cops probing accident that killed woman, seriously injured boy


KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Railway Department has launched an internal investigation of the tragic accident here that left a woman dead and maimed her 11-year-old son on Tuesday (Nov 20).

Its director Mohammad Safri Abdul Habi said a board of enquiry would look into the circumstances surrounding the incident at Kampung Petagas near here.

"It is for an internal investigation of our operations," he said in a statement on Wednesday (Nov 20).

"We have lodged a police report to allow the authorities to conduct an investigation."

He said the department was constantly implementing measures to ensure pedestrians' safety along railway tracks.

"We have installed a gate, but further action will be discussed.

"A coordination meeting will be held with other departments such as the Public Works Department (JKR) to explore ways to improve safety in the area," he added.

He said such measures were aimed at preventing similar incidents and ensuring the safety of both pedestrians and train passengers.

Lena Gabin, 41, a mother of four, was walking her youngest son home from school at about 1.30pm when they were hit by a train while crossing the tracks.

National Consumer Council advisor Hashima Hasbullah Hashim, who was also in the area to fetch her child from school, said she heard the sound of the train horn and went with others to help the boy, who was seriously injured.

The woman was dragged some 20m from where she was hit while her son was found sitting up crying in pain some distance away.

Penampang OCPD Supt Sammy Newton said an investigation was ongoing and urged witnesses to come forward.

He also urged the public not to speculate or share videos of the accident.
