Health Ministry cooperation will ensure food safety at Parliament cafeterias, says Speaker

KUALA LUMPUR: Parliament will cooperate with the Health Ministry to ensure food safety and quality standards are met after a cafeteria in the building was ordered to shut down, says Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul.

This is after the cafeteria in the Parliament building's main block was shut down for two weeks due to hygiene issues.

"The Malaysian Parliament is aware that the cafeteria on Level 1 of the Parliament building, handled by Pak Tam Katering Sdn Bhd, was shut down for cleaning and also to improve how food and drinks are prepared," he told the Dewan Rakyat.

"The Malaysian Parliament supports the (Health Department under the) Health Ministry's decision and recommendations, as well as to stop using the services of Pak Tam Katering pending further approval," he said.

It is learnt that the cafeteria was shut down due to non-compliance with health procedures.

Checks also showed that chairs from the cafeteria had been moved to the lawmakers' lounge.

A notice of closure posted on the door to the cafeteria from the Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya Health Department states it is ordered to close from 6pm on Nov 13 to Nov 26, issued under Section 11 of the Food Act 1983.

The current Dewan Rakyat meeting, which began on Oct 14, ends on Dec 12.

The cafeteria was operating on Wednesday morning before it closed.
