Hazmat team called after Papar Hospital fire, no hazards found

KOTA KINABALU: The Fire and Rescue Department's Hazardous Material Unit (Hazmat) was summoned following a fire that broke out in the pharmacy supply store at Papar district hospital on Monday night (Nov 11), but no hazardous risk was detected.

No casualties were reported, although a nearby research laboratory room was affected by the heat but not destroyed.

The department received the report at 7.02pm and dispatched a team of eight from Papar fire station, assisted by five firefighters from Kimanis fire station.

The Hazmat team of seven came from the state capital, about 40km away.

"The pharmacy store was completely burnt, and the team on site used water from the fire engine and the nearest fire hydrant."

"Papar Hospital's Emergency Response Team (ERT) also used three hose reel channels from the hospital building during initial firefighting efforts on the scene."

"The state Fire and Rescue Department's Hazmat team inspected the fire location and did not detect any danger involving chemical, radioactive, or dangerous gas substances."

"Overhaul operations are currently underway," said the department spokesman.
