Speaker calls for MPs to adopt healthy habits

DEWAN Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul is encouraging MPs to incorporate light exercises into their routines to promote healthier lifestyles.

“The Parliament clinic conducted health checks on MPs in 2023. The results highlighted health concerns, including high blood pressure, high blood glucose and high cholesterol levels, which increase the risk of non-communicable diseases,” he said.

To encourage healthy habits, Parliament has introduced a “Sugar-Free Wednesday” initiative.

Additionally, MPs are now encouraged to take brief exercise breaks, or “X-Breaks,” during Parliament sessions.

Khoo Poay Tiong (PH-Kota Melaka) also called for action against lawmakers who smoke in the Parliament building.

Khoo said while there are three dedicated smoking zones, some are still puffing away, especially in the backbenchers club room.

In July, Johari reminded lawmakers to go for health screenings as soon as possible, as failure to do so by Nov 11 would result in their names being published on the Parliament website.
