Undergraduates lodge police report on online sexual harassment

PETALING JAYA: A group of undergraduates from Universiti Malaya has filed a police report regarding the UM Confessions Telegram group, alleging that it has become a platform for sexual harassment.

The group, comprising Mahasiswa Progresif, NewGen UM, and Demokrat MALAYA, in a Facebook post said that the Telegram platform, which should be a safe space, has turned into a venue for online sexual harassment.

"We stand with the victims and will continue to push for accountability and justice," the group declared on Facebook on Wednesday (Oct 23) after lodging a report at the Brickfields district police station.

"Sexual harassment has no place in our society, and we will not stay silent. This is just the beginning; we will follow up on this issue until the necessary actions are taken," they added.

An online portal reported that the Telegram group known as 'UM Confessions' has amassed around 7,000 members. The group, which spoke to the online portal, claimed that the Telegram space was filled with offensive and obscene content, targeting individual students and creating a toxic environment within the campus community.
