Sabah urged to efficiently use Budget 2025 allocations

KOTA KINABALU: After granting Sabah and Sarawak the largest development allocations in Budget 2025, the responsibility now lies with the states to ensure that all plans are effectively implemented, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He emphasised that he does not want to hear about delays or losses caused by inefficiencies or corrupt practices that could hinder the progress of developments planned with the allocated funds.

Anwar also urged the people of Sabah to appreciate the Federal Government's initiative in striving to bring more positive changes to the state and its residents.

"Yes, we need more funds to upgrade and repair the infrastructure in Sabah, and thank God, the Pan Borneo project has recommenced and is ongoing,” Anwar stated during his opening speech at the Sabah International Blue Economy Conference Malaysia, 2024, on Saturday (Oct 19).

"Please appreciate the fact that the allocation for Sabah is the highest ever recorded over these years. Will this solve all of the problems? No, but it is a substantial attempt, and we will continue to pursue this while ensuring transparency and efficiency in implementation," he remarked.

"I do not want any losses due to delays and corruption. Work as a team. It is now your responsibility to make sure it works," he stressed.

Anwar mentioned that despite Sabah being a multi-ethnic and multicultural state, its people can still work together harmoniously, showing compassion and respect as a family.

He expressed gratitude to the state for allowing him to be part of these development plans.

On Friday (Oct 18), Anwar announced that development funds for Sabah and Sarawak would continue to be prioritised, with both states receiving the highest amounts compared to others, at RM6.7bil and RM5.9bil respectively.

The Federal Government is also planning to double the special grant for Sabah and Sarawak to RM600mil in 2025, Anwar added.
