KUCHING: Bintulu Port is set to be handed over from the Federal Government to Sarawak by the end of this year, says Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah.

The Deputy Premier stated that the state and Federal governments are in the final phase of negotiations, with only one outstanding issue left to resolve.

"Our committee is actively engaging the Ministry of Transport to finalise the issue.

"Once that is settled, we will proceed with the transfer of Bintulu Port from a federal port to a state port," Uggah told reporters after visiting the Unifor Complex project on Friday (Sept 20).

He mentioned that the compensation amount to be paid by the Sarawak government for taking over the port is still being worked out.

The Bintulu Port Authority (Dissolution) Bill was passed in Parliament on July 17, paving the way for the port's handover to Sarawak.

Last month, a federal-state committee meeting jointly chaired by Uggah and Transport Minister Anthony Loke established a clear timeline for Bintulu Port to be handed over by the end of December.
