42 arrests, 625 summonses issued in weekend Johor drunk driving ops

JOHOR BARU: Johor police have detained 42 individuals including two women in a three-day state-wide traffic operation to curb drunk driving.

State police chief Comm M. Kumar said the special operation was carried out from Friday (Aug 23) to Sunday (Aug 25).

He said the 42 suspects were aged between 25 and 68 years out of 1,824 individuals checked.

“Police also inspected a total of 1,585 vehicles and issued 625 summonses for various traffic violations,” he said in a statement here on Monday (Aug 26).

Comm Kumar added that the operation was to stop drunk driving which posed a danger to other road users, saying that it is a major concern that public awareness of the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol remains low.

“The effects of driving while intoxicated contribute to not only road accidents but also death. Don’t consume to have fun to the point of neglecting your safety and other road users.

“We will not compromise against drunk drivers and would carry out total enforcement against such irresponsible road users,” he added.

In an unrelated matter, Johor Baru South police also carried out a traffic operation involving other agencies such as the Road Transport Department (JPJ), Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) and the Department of Environment (DoE) on Sunday (Aug 25) and Monday (Aug 26).

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said the operation was held along Jalan Skudai and Pantai Lido here between 5pm and 1am.

“A total of 286 individuals with 257 vehicles have been inspected. From the figure, some 115 motorcycles were seized for further inspection and 153 summonses were issued for various traffic offences including driving without a license and illegal modification of their vehicles.

“JPJ also issued 54 summonses for various offences while the DoE issued 46 compound summonses and 52 inspection notices on vehicles that have loud exhausts,” he added.

ACP Raub also said that police also arrested a 28-year-old local man after the suspect tested positive for drugs.

“Cooperation between the police and other agencies involved is a positive step in ensuring safety and increasing awareness among road users, in particular motorcyclists, about road rules,” he added.
