KUALA LUMPUR: The Barisan Nasional win in the Nenggiri state by-election shows the people of Kelantan accept the partnership formed under the unity government, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He said the win reflected the growing support for the Madani government, in line with recent signs of economic progress.
"God willing, this victory will boost morale among the Madani government to continue safeguarding the people's welfare and to elevate the nation to new heights," he said in a Facebook post on Sunday (Aug 18).
Anwar also congratulated Barisan candidate Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani, 38, also known as 'Awie', on his victory.
Barisan recaptured the Nenggiri state seat with a majority of 3,352 votes.
The Kelantan Umno Youth chief polled 9,091 votes to beat PAS candidate Mohd Rizwadi Ismail, representing Perikatan Nasional, who obtained 5,739 votes.
After hosting a luncheon in honour of visiting Brunei Crown Prince Pengiran Muda Mahkota Al-Muhtadee Billah Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah here on Sunday, Anwar described the Nenggiri by-election result as surprising.
He said the people recognised Umno's ability to gain support from the Malay and the Orang Asli communities in the PAS and Bersatu stronghold in Kelantan.
"It was expected to be a tough challenge for the Umno and unity government candidate, but this result is surprising. It shows that the people are rejecting politics of insults and slander.
"This (victory) will give new spirit to Umno, Barisan, Pakatan Harapan and partners in the unity government to work even harder and confident in our stance.
"God willing, sooner or later, the people, including the Malays, will realise that this change will benefit them and all Malaysians," he said.
