Dr Wee emphasises importance of embracing cultural diversity

PETALING JAYA: Experiencing differing cultures and histories broadens one's acceptance of each other in this multicultural country, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

The MCA president said this on his Facebook page after he and other MCA leaders visited the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur on Friday (Aug 16).

Dr Wee, who is also the Ayer Hitam MP, said that visiting cultural museums broadens the acceptance of different cultures.

"The museum houses many artefacts of significant artistic, historical, and civilisational value, all meticulously preserved.

"Delving into and understanding Islamic civilisations helps us embrace diversity as Malaysians. After all, Malaysia is a country of diverse religions, races, and cultures.

“By visiting the museum, non-Muslim communities can gain clearer insights into the lifestyle, art, and culture of the Islamic community," he said.

"Islamic civilisation is indeed remarkable. So are Chinese and Indian civilisations. As Malaysians, we are fortunate to live in a country with a multicultural society. Our diversity is unique and a heritage that must be preserved," he said.

Dr Wee also praised Yeoh Wen Fei, the group’s guide at the museum.

"Yeoh, a Malaysian, is an archaeology graduate who received her Bachelor’s Degree from Peking University, China and her Master’s Degree in Archaeology and Heritage Management from University College London, in the United Kingdom.

"Yeoh's extensive background in archaeology and her international education made her insights particularly valuable, as her deep understanding of both Islamic and global cultural contexts enriched our appreciation of the museum's artefacts and their significance," he said.
