Arena Larkin Aquatic Centre undergoes massive refurbishment

JOHOR BARU: The cleaning and refurbishment of Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) Arena Larkin Aquatic Centre is underway.

Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said this ensures users' safety and comfort and restores public confidence in the state's sports facilities.

“The refurbishment will include replacing the anti-corrosion system and the tiles in the diving and swimming pools. The water drainage system will be thoroughly clean as well.

“I have been informed that the project is expected to be completed by November this year. The centre is scheduled to be reopened to the public in early January 2025,” he said in a Facebook post on Tuesday (Aug 13).

Onn Hafiz added that efforts would be made to ensure all state facilities are in the best condition.

On Aug 1, Johor Youth, Sports, Entrepreneur Development, and Cooperatives Committee chairman Mohd Hairi Mad Shah reportedly said that the centre would be closed for the next five months due to E. coli bacteria contamination of two pools.

On Thursday (June 27), 19 out of the 900 students participating in a tournament at the centre were rushed to the hospital after experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, fever and itchy skin.

The incident was believed to be caused by water in the aquatic centre's swimming and diving pools.
