Sarawak has planted 35 million trees, says Huang

SARIKEI: Sarawak has planted 35 million trees as part of a campaign to raise awareness about the importance of conserving and rehabilitating forest areas.

Deputy Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii said this achievement placed Sarawak first among Malaysian states for its commitment to the 100 Million Tree Planting Campaign 2020-2025 initiative.

“This effort is part of our commitment to reduce the impact of climate change and restore the affected ecosystems,” he said when opening the Karnival Alam Kita Sarikei 2024 here on Saturday, Bernama reported.

He said Sarawak also played a crucial role in forest conservation and renewable energy use, contributing to global efforts to tackle climate change through the Nationally Determined Contributions.

Under the Paris Agreement, Malaysia has pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions’ intensity by 45% by 2030 compared to 2005 levels, involving various sectors including energy, transportation and agriculture.

On the carnival, Huang said its objective was to strengthen and promote public awareness of sustainability practices, as well as enhance the ministry’s collaboration with its stakeholders.
