Suspected headscarf thief nabbed after four days on the run

KOTA KINABALU: A man suspected of stealing 40 headscarves from a boutique in Tawau has been apprehended about four days after the theft.

The 48-year-old suspect was tracked down by Criminal Investigation Department officers to a house on Batu 2, Jalan Apas at about 8.30am on Thursday (Aug 8).

Tawau police chief Asst Comm Jasmin Hussin said the boutique owner had filed a report on Monday (Aug 5).

"The owner reported that 40 tudung were missing from the shop in the Sabindo area and that they had incurred losses of RM600 from the incident," he said in a statement on Friday (Aug 9).

ACP Jasmin said police then issued a statement seeking information on the suspect and initiated an investigation under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft after reviewing the shop's CCTV footage.

"Acting based on a tip-off, our officers were able to locate the suspect.

"Several sets of clothing believed to have been used by the suspect during the theft were also seized," he said.

ACP Jasmin noted that the suspect has prior criminal convictions, including two related to drug offenses.

The investigation is ongoing, he said, adding that efforts are being made to recover the stolen headscarves.
